CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Soul Evans
CANON: Soul Eater
CANON REFERENCE: Soul Eater wiki
AGE: 16
GENDER: male
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: HS3

APPEARANCE: Soul's most noticeable features are probably his spiky white hair, red eyes, and razor sharp teeth, all of which are suspected to be minor mutations that run in the Evans family. When you look a little closer, you might notice that he's athletic, too, but that's usually hidden under long pants and long sleeves. Another staple of his wardrobe are headbands - thin and plain to big and decorated with patches and stickers... you name it. His favorite is a white one with a red tag bearing his name and design. One could easily mistake Soul for uncaring, because he typically wears an expression of disinterest and slouches lazily.

As a weapon, he's a scythe, with a plain grey haft and a blade with a red and black zig-zag design. Where the blade and haft connect is a red eye with a black pupil that Soul can use to physically express how he's feeling. Unlike a regular scythe, his metal is pretty pliable, allowing him to bend and twist however his partner requires - and for dramatic effect, of course. As Soul's powers progress, his weapon form may undergo slight changes.
PERSONALITY: On the surface, Soul may appear harsh when he shows something besides apathy. Sarcasm is one of his favorite forms of rhetoric, and his friends are constantly subject to it, his partner being the the usual target. He jokes, teases, and antagonizes, and doesn't always listen to his friends, sometimes outright ignoring them out of spite. This leads to instances of sheer, idiotic impulsiveness that tend to leave him in some sort of a bind.

Soul's also got an infatuation with being "cool," which is part of why he puts up that snarky, disinterested exterior - because that's how cool people act. While he can be rather calm and cool-headed in situations that may leave others freaking out (though he's had his share of freakouts, too), the appearance is just that. He doesn't have the slightest idea how to deal with women, despite boasting of his prowess. When he gets angry, it's not a slow process; it happens in a snap, and just like that, he's raging and raring for a fight. If he's around those that are easily excitable, there's a 50-50 chance that he'll be excited right along with them (the other 50 usually means someone with a calmer demeanor is around). In an attempt to hold up the "cool" facade, Soul tries to face his problems head-on... and, more often than not, gets shot down.

It's underneath all of that where you get to who Soul really is. Though he hides it well, he has a deep-rooted feeling of insecurity that encompasses everything from his musical talent to his inability to fight alone. There's also a feeling that he doesn't deserve his friends. Once upon a time, he was even afraid of being among others because he didn't feel good enough for them, especially when compared to his talented, well-loved brother. That's where the "cool" appearance doesn't lie - due to Soul's sense of inadequacy, he became more withdrawn from others, which now manifests in the uncaring, apathetic expression he defaults to.

Still, he cares deeply for his friends and his family, no matter the trouble they cause him, or he causes them. Soul would protect them all with his life should the need arise, believing it his duty and responsibility to do so, especially when it comes to his partner, because his personal safety doesn't matter as long as his friends alright. To this end, his willpower and determination knows no bounds. Soul will do what it takes do what they have to, even if it means putting them in danger... but it's a matter of personal pride that he can always find a way to ensure their safety. Soul worries about them all, and about the state of the world that they live in, for that reason. He'd never willingly show it, of course, except in extreme circumstances. For now, he'll be sticking to his cool exterior.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Soul's primary mutation is the ability to turn into a scythe. He can do either partial transformations, say turning an arm into a scythe blade, or full-body transformations. In a full scythe form, he can be used by anyone. But despite being able to talk and help his partner out, he's otherwise just a normal scythe, if a bit more bendy than expected.

When partnered with an empath or a telepath or someone else of that nature, however, Soul's abilities are expanded. Being raised in a musical family gave him an acuity for music, and through his connection with an empath or telepath, he may be able hear others' souls or minds and use that to their advantage. This means that when they go into battle with their souls connected through his partner's powers, Soul can make them stronger or faster by playing the piano within his soul in a certain way. For instance, increasing the tempo means they will gain speed, and by striking certain chords, their attacks will get stronger, or these things could be reversed. He could also play the opposite sounds of a person's wavelength to incapacitate them if needed.

Playing the piano too much, and especially playing an opposite wavelength, wears on both Soul and his partner quickly, so he doesn't like to use that ability if he can help it. Small bursts are usually where he'll call it quits, unless a battle is getting too fierce to handle normally. He certainly can't use these powers by himself, as he lacks the supernatural perception to do so.

AU HISTORY: Born into a wealthy family of musicians, Soul's path in life had more or less been chosen for him at an early age. He was taught to play the piano, and although he was talented, Soul never acknowledged it. Instead, he looked to his brother Wes with envy, telling himself that he would never measure up. The bond between them suffered as a result, with Soul becoming more distant and unsociable, even though Wes treated him kindly. Soul always strove to to get better, but his insecurity and jealousy never faded. As far as he was concerned, he would always be playing second fiddle to his brother.

Then his mutation was discovered. Soul was the first mutant in the family, something that both baffled and excited him - baffled, because his mutation was to turn into a scythe, which was possibly the weirdest shape-shifting ability out there; excited, because it was something even Wes could never do. But because there was no way for him to really test his abilities, he continued on his designated path without bothering much with it. That is, until a stranger came to speak to him.

That day, he was told about a school for mutants, a place specifically created to give young mutants a safe environment to learn about their powers. Soul was doubtful at first, sticking to what he knew would work for him - the piano. Further insistence simply led had him telling that person to listen. The song he played then was dark, and it spoke of all the things he didn't want anyone to know. Insecurity, jealousy, frustration, and more all bubbled to the surface for the sake of showing who he was, and why no one should want him around. And yet, when asked what they thought of his song, his visitor said they liked it, and asked again that he come back to the school with them. That determination intrigued Soul, and he finally agreed, and has been a student at the Institute the few years since.
